One Planet, Many Actions: How Haycarb Marked World Environment Day Across Global Operations

Share

World Environment Day serves as a timely reminder of the collective responsibility to protect the natural environment. While global challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss require large-scale solutions, meaningful impact often begins with local action. Across Haycarb’s global operations, this principle came to life through a series of initiatives that reflected a shared commitment to environmental stewardship.

In Sri Lanka, teams across multiple locations engaged in activities that combined environmental action with community awareness. In Negombo, over 100 volunteers, including Haycarb employees, collaborated with the Central Environmental Authority – Gampaha District Office, Negombo Harischandra National School, and the Negombo Municipal Council for a coastal clean-up. Nearly 300 kilograms of waste were collected, contributing to the restoration of the beach while reinforcing the importance of protecting coastal ecosystems.

Further inland, at Herath Gunaratne Vidyalaya in Galmuruwa, the Madampe team partnered with environmental educator and former Beddagana Wetland Park Manager, Narmadha Dangampola, to conduct an awareness programme for school students, followed by a tree-planting initiative. More than 100 students participated, gaining a deeper understanding of environmental conservation before planting 25 trees within the school premises. In addition, the Madampe team also initiated the reuse of treated wastewater for gardening.

Similarly, at the Saranatissa Junior School in Badalgama, another group of students was introduced to biodiversity conservation and wildlife ecology through an educational session led by Sudesh Ruvinda, Senior Lecturer at the University of Kelaniya. The session concluded with a tree-planting effort that encouraged long-term environmental responsibility among young learners.

Environmental action extended beyond Sri Lanka, reflecting a shared commitment across Haycarb’s international operations.

In Indonesia, teams at PT Mapalus Makawanua Charcoal Industry (MMCI) carried out tree-planting initiatives, with 9 trees planted to support local ecosystem restoration. In parallel, PT Haycarb Palu Mitra (HPM) organized a beach clean-up at Taipa Beach, contributing to coastal conservation efforts while encouraging employee participation in hands-on sustainability practices.

In Thailand, the Carbokarn team conducted a tree-planting programme throughout the month of June in commemoration of World Environment Day. A total of 320 trees were planted within the factory premises along its boundary, supporting efforts to enhance green cover and improve the surrounding environment.

At Shizuka, Thailand, the team carried out a roadside clean-up along the route leading to its factory premises, helping to improve the surrounding environment for both employees and the local community.

While each initiative addressed different environmental priorities, from waste management and ecosystem protection to awareness and education, they were united by a common purpose: caring for the environments in which Haycarb operate. These efforts demonstrate how local actions, when carried out consistently across locations, can contribute to a broader culture of sustainability.

These initiatives extend beyond a single day of observance, representing ongoing efforts across operations and communities. Activities focused on employee participation, environmental awareness, and local ecosystem support continue to contribute to more responsible practices across Haycarb’s global footprint.

As environmental challenges continue to evolve, sustained and collective action remains essential. Efforts such as these, alongside longer-term investments, support a more consistent and practical approach to environmental responsibility across both operations and the communities in which Haycarb operates.
