What is Sath Diyawara?
“Sath Diyawara” is a CSR project which is being carried out by our very own subsidiary Puritas (Pvt) Ltd , which is also the key CSR initiative undertaken by the Hayleys Group which was initiated with the aim of giving hope to people by providing good quality water, enriching lives and facilitating socio-economical needs in areas affected by Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). This massive project has so far illumined the lives of 33,593 People in 19 villages over the completion of 16 projects, at a cost of LKR 64 million. Through Sath Diyawara initiative, 160,000 Liters of water is purified daily thus giving hope to over 1,162 CKD patients.
Why Sath Diyawara?
The Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is the most discussed and most debated topic in Sri Lanka in the recent past, which is the failure of kidneys over a period of time, without any identifiable symptoms until latter stages. The patients start feeling the discomfort only during final stages of the disease and most of the time; it is too late for the survival and their life expectancy is calculated by months. The male farmers in highly agricultural areas are main victims of CKD and their loss severely affects the country’s productivity and further such loses leave behind unsolved socioeconomic complications in the community. Currently, the disease is predominant in the North Central Province but is rapidly spreading to other areas such as North Western, Eastern and Uva Provinces.
Sath Diyawara So Far….
Puritas (Pvt) Ltd commissioned its first Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant in D10 Maithreepura, Padaviya on the 15th of August 2014 and later commissioned the opening of three more plants on the 10th of March 2015. Since then Sath Diyawara has completed 16 projects in 19 villages providing an invaluable community service with each project. Taking this great course forward, we are planning to commence 5 more projects which are to be completed within the financial year of 2019/2020 which will cater purified water to 10,000 more people.

Many years ago Haycarb PLC pioneered the Green Charcoaling in Asia, by introducing the patented pollution free charcoaling process combined with power generation through Recogen. In 2014, taking this initiation to greater heights, we launched “Haritha Angara”, a project to convert traditional pit charcoaling into eco-friendly closed-pit charcoaling. Open pit charcoaling is prohibited by state institutions responsible for environment protection because it releases noxious gases such as CO, CH4, C2H6 and NOx. The “Haritha Angara” project involves building units which combusts such harmful gases which get released during the traditional charcoaling process.
We kicked off the project Initially by providing technical support only but later we extended it by offering interest free, long term loans to build new environmental friendly pits with combustion chambers and improve existing pits, which has been wholeheartedly accepted by our suppliers. Since then, “Haritha Angara” has grown leaps and bounds into a project which even has the acknowledgment and the backing of Coconut Development Authority (CDA) as well. The Financial Assistance given with Zero interest in this regard is Rs. 26 million. This initiation of Haycarb has had a meritorious impact on 500 families directly and 3,000 people indirectly. Haritha Angara has not only aided the communities with financial support but also plays a vital role in protecting the environment as a green initiative. Haycarb continues to pay a premium price for charcoal made using this method to ensure high quality and to promote the eco friendliness of the project. Haritha Angara also provides a common ground for both the company and the customers by helping keep a constant supply of high quality raw material, which ultimately helps Haycarb to supply high quality end products to the customers.
At present there are 200 pits in operation throughout the island and a further 10 units are planned to be installed around the country. Through this initiative, Haycarb has been able to ensure supply security and sustainability with the expected charcoal intake from the pits being a significant portion of the company’s raw material requirement.
We, at Haycarb strongly believe that through “Haritha Angara”, Haycarb can help protect the environment whilst uplifting the local supply of Charcoal thus providing additional income opportunities to the communities in rural areas, thereby encouraging empowerment and entrepreneurship in remote areas of our country.

The availability of raw material in Indonesia continued to be stable during the year under review contributing significantly to the results. He added that the productivity improvement initiatives launched under the Lean Operational platform reduced costs and increased value to its loyal customers.
Mr. Kariyawasan further said, “The initiatives launched to acquire new customer accounts, access new geographies, penetrate into new market segments and enhance its value added product portfolio backed by successful new product development projects showed positive results and contributed significantly to the performance of the activated carbon business. He noted that the environment engineering arm Puritas (Pvt.) Ltd., faced significant challenges both locally and regionally due to uncertainties in the external environment but posted satisfactory results consolidating its position as a superior provider of water and waste water purification solutions. The outlook for the environmental engineering sector remains stable with the increased awareness and growth for water and waste water purification systems in Sri Lanka and in the region. The ability to capitalize on these new opportunities has been strengthened through its strategic collaboration with Veolia Water for large scale water projects.
The sector continued to play a leading role in the CSR initiative Puritas Sath Diyawara executed by the Hayleys group of companies which currently provides 160,000 litres of safe drinking water across 19 villages in the Central and North Central Provinces of Sri Lanka that were at risk of chronic kidney disease. The company continued support to upkeep the purification plants and the expansion of the “Going Beyond” project to uplift the quality of life in the region through initiatives such as distribution of school supplies to over 2,500 school children that was successfully carried out for the 2019 academic year.
Mr. Kariyawasan stated that the company remains confident of its business model and the strategic position it holds in the coconut shell based activated carbon industry, regeneration services and the environmental engineering segment, to continue the growth trajectory of the company in an expanding global market for purification solutions backed by emphasis placed on environmental sustainability, standards and regulations globally.
