As the gentle waves ripple along the pristine coastline of Kumana National Park, an exciting new chapter begins. In December 2024, Haycarb PLC launched the latest season of its “Behold the Turtle“ conservation project, marking another milestone in its long-term commitment to preserving Sri Lanka’s endangered sea turtle species. Since this impactful initiative began in 2020, it has successfully released thousands of sea turtle hatchlings, ensuring that these vital creatures continue to thrive in our ocean ecosystems. By working closely with the Department of Wildlife Conservation, the project combines conservation efforts with community engagement to protect species such as loggerhead, olive ridley, hawksbill, green, and leatherback turtles.
A New Season, Renewed Enthusiasm
This season commenced with the collection of 1,400 turtle eggs from 12 carefully selected nesting sites along the Kumana coastline. These precious eggs were relocated to the Kirigalbae Turtle Hatchery, a controlled environment designed to protect them from potential predators and environmental threats. Our dedicated conservation team will continue its efforts until February 2025, ensuring that every hatchling is safely guided to the sea.
A Unique Approach to Conservation
The “Behold the Turtle” project utilizes ex-situ conservation methods, including proactive night patrols, careful egg relocation, and effective hatchery management. Our enthusiastic volunteers, including committed Haycarb employees, collaborate with wildlife officers to locate nests, monitor environmental conditions, and maintain the hatchery. This engaged and hands-on approach not only boosts hatchling survival rates but also deepens participants’ connection to nature. Over the years, the project has successfully released over 4,200 hatchlings each year, demonstrating its positive impact on local turtle populations.
Why Turtles Matter
Sea turtles are essential to the health of our marine ecosystems. Their nesting activities enrich coastal areas, while their grazing helps maintain coral reef health by controlling sponge populations. However, these species face significant threats from habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change. Initiatives like “Behold the Turtle” address these challenges and work to preserve the rich biodiversity of our oceans.
Global and Local Alignment
This initiative aligns with Haycarb’s “Activate 2030” ESG roadmap and reflects the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship and corporate responsibility. It also supports global efforts, such as the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 30×30 conservation target, along with national priorities like the Haritha Lanka Programme.
Looking Ahead
As Haycarb continues its work this season, the dedication of our enthusiastic team and supportive stakeholders is evident. “Behold the Turtle” sets a remarkable precedent for corporate-led conservation, showcasing creative practices, strong collaborations, and genuine community engagement.
We invite you to follow this journey as we work together to protect these magnificent creatures and their habitats.
